There’s no doubt about it – fashion styling looks sexy and glamorous on reality shows like The Rachel Zoe Project, It’s a Brad Brad World, and Styled By June.
Yes, we’re aware of the drama and the cat fights but we’re even more transfixed by the perks, the glitz, and the glam that the job entails.
As a fashion stylist, you’ll style models and celebrities and put looks together for the likes of movies, runways, TV shows, print ads, music videos, fashion labels, editorial photo shoots, red carpet appearances, and retailers and department stores.
Imagine having the opportunity to shine in front of influential people, brands, and media. Just the thought of it puts you on cloud nine, doesn’t it?
Sorry to say, but your enviable talents and fierce devotion to fashion alone won’t take you far in this business. “There’s more to fashion styling than most people think,” said Annie Lam, a Canadian fashion stylist and fashion editor.
So, what does it take to be a successful fashion stylist? More than you’d ever imagine, apparently.
Here’s an A to Z guide to give you a glimpse of the world of fashion styling and the skills you need to be a fashion stylist:
A for Awareness
Fashion is heavily influenced by the society and pop culture. You need to keep abreast of what’s happening in the world of art, news, music, politics, and cinema. The more you know, the more you’ll be inspired, and the wider the scope and dimension your styling will be. Like Steve Jobs famously declared, “Creativity is just connecting things.”
B for Business Sense
Most fashion stylists work for themselves and accept freelance assignments. To making a living as a stylist, you’ll need business, marketing, and administrative skills to manage your freelancing business, promote your services, and maintain client relationships.
